For HR and founders
Four ways the same CTC gives a different take-home
1. The basic pay split and PF basis
On a 12 LPA CTC with PF on the Rs 25,000 ceiling, a 40% basic gives ₹91,876 a month and a 50% basic gives ₹91,395. The gap is small because only gratuity grows with basic. If payroll deducts PF on full basic instead, a 50% basic gives ₹85,395. Confirm which basis you use before you promise a take-home figure.
2. The new PF ceiling
From 17 September 2026 the PF wage ceiling is Rs 25,000, so employee PF is up to Rs 3,000 a month, up from Rs 1,800. Anyone whose PF wages are at or above the ceiling sees take-home drop by up to Rs 1,200 a month against an offer calculated before then.
3. Variable pay inside CTC
With 20% of a 12 LPA CTC as variable, monthly take-home is ₹71,876 instead of ₹91,395. The rest arrives as a yearly payout, if the plan pays out at all. Say so in the offer.
4. What the company pays beyond CTC
CTC already includes employer PF and gratuity, but EDLI and the EPF admin charge sit on top. See employer cost in a salary sheet for the full picture, and put the structure in writing with an offer letter or appointment letter.
Method
How the calculator works
- FY 2026-27 slabs (unchanged by Budget 2026), new regime by default with the ₹75,000 standard deduction and 87A rebate up to ₹12 lakh taxable income, plus 4% cess.
- Basic pay is 50% of CTC - the minimum share of wages under the Labour Codes in force since 21 November 2025. HRA and other allowances make up the rest of gross.
- Employer and employee PF are 12% each on basic capped at the ₹25,000 PF wage ceiling in force since 17 September 2026 (it was ₹15,000 before). Some employers have not yet updated payroll and still deduct on ₹15,000. Employer PF is part of CTC.
- Gratuity provision of 4.81% of basic is shown inside CTC, as most Indian offer letters do. It is paid when you leave after eligibility, not monthly.
- Professional tax of ₹200 a month (₹2,400 a year). Some states charge ₹300 in February or have no PT at all.
- ESI applies only if monthly gross is ₹21,000 or less (0.75% employee, 3.25% employer).
- No HRA exemption, 80C investments beyond PF, variable pay, or bonus. Old-regime figures count only employee PF towards 80C.

Got questions?
In-hand salary: FAQs
CTC, PF, tax regime, and Labour Code questions.
- Start with monthly CTC (annual CTC / 12). Remove employer-side costs that never reach your bank: employer PF, gratuity provision, and employer ESI if it applies. That leaves gross salary. From gross, subtract employee PF, employee ESI (if gross is ₹21,000 or less), professional tax, and monthly income tax (TDS). What is left is in-hand salary.
- Usually 70-90%. In FY 2026-27, salaries up to about ₹12.75 lakh gross pay no income tax under the new regime, so take-home is around 90% of CTC. ₹75,129 a month on 10 LPA is about 90%; at 30 LPA it falls to about 80% because of tax.
- The PF wage ceiling rose from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 on 17 September 2026, so at the ceiling 12% is ₹3,000 a month, up from ₹1,800. Payroll teams that have not updated may still deduct on ₹15,000, and take-home looks higher until they do. Some employers deduct 12% of full basic, which lowers take-home but grows your PF balance. Check your offer letter or ask HR which applies.
- The Labour Codes in force since 21 November 2025 require wages (basic + DA) to be at least 50% of pay. If your basic was lower, your employer may restructure it. That raises the gratuity provision and - if PF is on full basic - PF, which can lower take-home slightly while increasing retirement savings.
- No. Under the new regime only the ₹75,000 standard deduction is allowed from salary. Professional tax (up to ₹2,500 a year) is deductible only under the old regime.
- Variable pay is part of CTC but is not in your monthly salary, so a larger variable share lowers your monthly take-home for the same CTC. It is also taxed with the rest of your year's income, and tax is deducted in monthly instalments, so even the fixed part is a little lower. The calculator above has a variable pay option so you can see both.
- Work backwards from the take-home you want. The CTC calculator on this site does that: enter the monthly in-hand you want and it finds the smallest CTC that delivers it, under the new and the old tax regime.
